FREDONIA, N.Y. -- The Fredonia State women's basketball team took on an undefeated Houghton squad, and took them to overtime before coming up short, 80-74, on Tuesday.
Jakiera Stackhouse collected her second double-double of the season scoring 21 points and grabbing 11 rebounds.
Grace Alexander added 16 points and a game-high seven assists.
Fredonia State was clinging to a two-point lead, 65-53, with 1.6 seconds left to play. Houghton had the an in-bounds opportunity at half court and Keely Mullins took the lob pass in the key and converted a layup to send the game into overtime. Mullins had a dominant game for the Highlanders and would finish with 30 points, 12 rebounds, and six assists.
With 1:40 remaining in overtime, Alexander would put the Blue Devils up 72-71 after converting a pair fo free throws.
Mullins would strike again, nailing a three pointer on the next possession as Houghton would outscore the Devils 9-2 over the last 1:20 to take the victory and improve to 7-0.
The largest lead for either team was eight points, achieved three times by Fredonia State, the last time coming at 35-27 early in the third quarter. The game featured 14 lead changes and 10 ties.
The Devils fall to 5-3.
Jayssa Snelick would finish with 14 points and nine rebounds, and
Aliyah Hopkins had 10 points and nine rebounds off the bench.
For Houghton, Tabitha DeVries had 20 points and 11 rebounds, and Crysta Lacrosse had 15 points. The trio of Mullins, DeVries, and Lacrosse tallied 65 of Houghton's 80 points.
Houghton was stalled by 3-21 shooting from three-point land, but made up for it connecting on 13-14 free throws.
Fredonia State (5-2) won the battle on the boards, 41-39, and hit on 6-19 threes. Alexander had three treys.
The Devils have one more contest before heading into final exams next week. They play host to Alfred University at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
