PLATTSBRUGH, N.Y. -- The high-scoring duo of
Gabby Irwin and
Bronwyn Madden hooked up one last time this season, but the Devils could not take down Plattsburgh in a 2-1 loss in the SUNYAC Tournament Semifinals on Wednesday afternoon.
The Devils took the lead in the 17th minute when Irwin scored her seventh goal of the season on an assist from Madden. Madden made a long pass from the other side of midfield to a streaking Irwin. Irwin was contested by the Plattsburgh defender, but was able to slip a shot under a diving Desiree DuBois for the 1-0 lead.
The Devils would hold the lead for about 10 minutes when Kelly Licata was assisted by Lia Parker to get Plattsbuirgh on the board.
The game-winning goal would come on a penalty kick in the 71st minute. Plattsburgh's Sydney Myers was brought down in the box with a wide open net. The whistle gave Myers -- who leads the SUNYAC in scoring -- a free kick. She ripped it just out of the reach of a diving
Casey Fetzner.Â
Fetzner made six saves and gave up two scores, while Plattsburgh's DuBois made one save and gave up one score.Â
Plattsburgh (10-6-2) led in shots (16-6), shots on goal (8-2), and corner kicks (6-4). They advance to the SUNYAC Championship game.
Fredonia State finishes its season with a 10-6-4 mark.
