Devils defeat New Paltz

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. -- The Fredonia State women's soccer team defeated New Paltz 2-1 on Saturday afternoon at University Stadium. The Devils jumped out to a 3-0 first-half lead, which included two goals by Bronwyn Madden, to claim the victory.

It was a big win for the Devils, who defeated last year's SUNYAC Champions. The Devils fell twice to the Hawks last year -- once in the regular season and again in the SUNYAC Tournament.

The Devils now stand at 5-4-3 overall and 2-1 in the SUNYAC.

New Paltz (5-3-2 / 1-1-1) scored twice in the second half -- the second one coming with just under 26 minutes left to play -- but the Blue Devil defense held on.

Madden acted fast, scoring three minutes into the game, and again at the 6:46 mark. It was her sixth and seventh goals of the season. Anna Ratchuk assisted on the first score. In the 37th minute, Gabby Irwin scored unassisted to put the Devils up 3-0.

Addison Weiner scored in the 59th minute to put the Hawks on the board. In the 65th minute, Alyssa Deutsch scored with an assist from Brooke Kelleher to make it a one-goal game.

New Paltz held a decided edge statistically, outshooting the Devil 29 to 13, and holding a 16-7 edge in shots on goal.

Fredonia State's Casey Fetzner had a busy day with 14 saves. Madelyn Jachimiak made four saves fo New Paltz.

Next up for the Devils is a SUNYAC contest vs. Buffalo State on Wed., Oct 8.
