FREDONIA, N.Y. -- The Fredonia State women's basketball team fell just short vs. Cortland, 52-42, on Tuesday.
Allie Wandell turned in a valiant effort, scoring 12 points and grabbing 12 rebounds in a defensive battle.
Cortland led after the first quarter, 15-9. The Red Dragon's Jolene Lusk opened the second quarter with a layup put them up, 17-9.
From there, the Blue Devils stepped their game up. Wandell hit a three pointer followed by a three-point play to close the gap to two points, 17-15.
Kyla Smith then converted a floater in the lane, followed by a layup by
Payton Gilbert giving the Devils a 19-17 lead.
After a pair of free throws by Cortland's Kayla Campbell tied the game at 19, Fredonia State ran off the next eight points for their biggest lead of the game, 27-19.
The Devils held a 29-24 lead at the half.
Cortland crept back into the game, outscoring the Devils 17-11 in the third quarter for a slim 41-40 lead. Cortland clamped down on defense in the fourth, allowing only two points by the Devils and came away with the 10-point victory.
The Devils played solid defense, forcing Cortland into 25 turnovers. Six different Blue Devils had two steals apiece. Cortland had a slight edge in rebounds, 36-34. Foul shooting proved to be a hurdle for the Devils, shooting 6-16 (38 percent) from the free throw line.
The Red Dragons were led by Brooke Tillotson with 11 points and Campbell with 10.
Cortland improves its season mark to 8-2 overall and 3-0 in the SUNYAC.
The Devils (4-5 / 1-2 SUNYAC) are back in action this weekend with games against Plattsburgh on Friday at 4 p.m. and Potsdam on Saturday at 1 p.m.
