BOXSCORE FREDONIA, N.Y. -- The Fredonia State men's basketball team started the New Year off right, defeating Houghton, 87-74, on Saturday afternoon.
Kai Woods led the Devils with 20 points and 11 rebounds for his third double-double of the year.
Tyrese Fuller added 14 points, and
Aiden Proudfoot had 12.
Keenan Roberts Jr. chipped in 11 points and
David Jordan had 10.
Malik Jemison was the sixth Blue Devil tto reach double digits with 11 points, six assists, and five steals.
Houghton opened the game with a three pointer before the Devils ran off the next 11 points, taking an 11-3 lead. By the end of the half, there would be six lead changes and Houghton nursed a 36-35 lead going into the locker room.
Woods had 12 points and 7 rebounds at the turn. Houghton was paced by Preston Thomas with 11 points.
After some wise halftime adjustments, the Devils came out firing, outscoring Houghton 16-5 to take a ten-point lead, 51-41. Following a basket by Houghton, the Devils scored the next eight and had their biggest lead of the game to that point of 16 points, 59-43. That completed a 24-7 surge to start the second half.
Houghton would pull within eight points, but the Devils maintained a comfortable lead the rest of the way.
Houghton (5-4) was led by Thomas with 19 points, and Lou Bellamy had 18 points and 16 rebounds. Trey Flatt added 15 points.
The Blue Devils (2-8) return to action on Tuesday with a home women's/men's doubleheader at 4 and 6 p.m vs. Cortland.
