Comeback Classic

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Maddie Payne ripped a shot from just outside the goal box that hooked over the Houghton goalkeeper's head to provide the game-winning score in a 2-1 victory over the Highlanders on Saturday. On a corner kick, Grace Auer tapped the ball to a wide open Payne, who launched the shot over a leaping Preslee Miller.

Down 1-0, the Devils came from behind to go 2-0 in their own Blue Devil Classic over the weekend. Oswego also finished 2-0. Houghton and Utica both went 0-2.

Houghton got on the board first, despite the Devils controlling the action much of the first half. The Highlander's Elena Eshe headed in a crossing pass from Natalie Milne for a score.

The Devils tied things up early in the second half. Gabby Irwin gathered the ball on a pass from Brooke Grazen and lofted it over the goalkeepers head.

Shortly after that, the Devils had two more quick shots on goal saved by Miller. Irwin and Grace Mackey had the opportunities for Fredonia State.

Payne's winner would come in the 76th minute.

Abby Szymkowiak had three saves for the Devils, as they improved to 3-1. Miller had 10 saves for Houghton.

In other action at the Classic, Oswego defeated Utica, 1-0. Katie Delgrosso scored in the 84th minute to secure the win for the Lakers.

The Devils travel to Keuka on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. start.
