FREDONIA, N.Y. -- In the Blue Devil Classic weekend tournament that was marked by thunder and lightning delays, the Fredonia State men's soccer team came out of a weather stoppage and had two quick scores to come back in a 2-1 win over Alfred University on Saturday.
The game was interrupted by a 40-minute lightning delay, stopping the clock with 46 seconds left in the first half and Alfred holding a 1-0 lead. When play resumed, the Devils took just 20 seconds to score.
With a crowd in the box,
Dylan McAfee passed the ball to
Zach Luce who connected on his first goal of the season to tie the game at 1-all.
Six-and-a-half minutes into the second half,
Kye Castelluccio's header provided the winning margin.
Freddie Butler sent a corner kick into a mass of players in front of the net. The ball came back out to Butler, and he sent a lofting ball to Castelluccio who used his noggin to knock it in the net.
"During the lightning delay we talked about needing a response," said head coach PJ Gondek. "We got one from McAfee and Luce. That goal gave us energy and when we got the second goal we had some momentum. They came at us late, but we were able to hang on. A big win for us. Now we need to string some more victories together next week."
Alfred's Justin Eaton had opened the scoring in the 27th minute on an assist from Noam Sokolovsky.
Thomas McDonald made two saves in goal for the Devils. Tyer Mulholland was credited with one save for the Saxons.
In the other men's game, Buffalo State downed Bryant & Stratton, 2-1, to claim the Blue Devil Classic title.
The Devils travel to St. Vincent College on Tuesday, then turn around and have a home game vs. Hilbert on Wednesday.
