BOXSCORE FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Fredonia State opened the home portion of its 2024 men's soccer season Tuesday night with a 1-1 tie against Chatham University.

All the scoring came in the first half. The visiting Cougars (1-0-1) took a 1-0 lead on a short shot by Justin Knox in the seventh minute. The Blue Devils (1-1-1) leveled the score on a penalty kick by Brian Taylor in the 36th minute. It was Taylor's second goal of the season.

The teams took turns applying offensive pressure throughout the second half. The Blue Devils forced much of the action, resulting in 23 total shots and 10 corner kicks overall (to none by Chatham) and had their best chance in the 87th minute when Huddy Kwiatkowski headed a ball ticketed for the upper left corner. Cougar goalkeeper Jason Kush made a leaping stop, one of his four saves.

Chatham's best chances came off the foot of Azavier Coppin, who was stopped by Blue Devil goalkeeper Thomas McDonald from point-blank range in the 56th minute, followed by a rebound and a shot off the left post by Izeyah Romo. Coppin also banged a shot off the right post in the 81st minute.

McDonald was credited with three saves.

"The stat sheet shows 23 shots vs. 8 shots and 10-0 in corners," Fredonia State Head Coach P.J. Gondek said. "That would appear to be a one-sided soccer game and to that extent, it was. Shots on goal, however, tell a different story (6 to 5 in favor of the Blue Devils). We just did not execute offensively tonight and that's why we tied."

The Devils will be at home this weekend. Along with the women's team, they will play host to the annual Blue Devil Classic, with games on Friday and Saturday. On Friday, Chiavetta's chicken will be available from 3:30-7:30 p.m., or until supplies last.
