Devils zap Naz

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- The Fredonia State softball team swept Nazareth, 8-0 and 7-2, in its final home games of the season on Wednesday. The games were a tuneup for the big Buffalo State doubleheader on Friday. Friday's contests were moved up from Saturday to take advantage of a favorable forecast. The series will greatly impact the Devils' playoff hopes and seeding.

The Devils made quick work of the Golden Flyers in Game 1. Emily Chelius spun a one-hit shutout and struck out four.

The Devils got a run in the first inning when Chelius picked up an RBI on a ground out, plating Allie Wandell, who had reached on an error, stole a base, and moved to third on a fly ball to right field.

Fredonia State tacked on four in the second. Megan Guidry scored the first run when she came home on a wild pitch. Later in the inning, Maddy Devore doubled home a pair of runs. The fourth run was plated by a Madison Lowe base hit.

Fredonia State tacked on three more in the bottom of the fifth to walk off the win via mercy rule. Alex Brizendine took off for third on a wild pitch, then took home on the errant throw to end the game.

Vanessa Galbraith picked up her sixth win of the year in Game 2.  She threw five innings of four-hit ball, striking out three and giving up two earned run. Jordan Kanick finished the game with two innings of scoreless ball. She gave up three hits and struck out a pair.

Mack Celauro led the offense with three hits, driving in two and scoring a run. Wandell went 2-4 with a triple and Devore went 2-2 with two walks and a stolen base. Kanick added a two-run double.

The Devils scored three in the bottom of the first and two in the second, cruising to victory.

The Devils improve to 13-21. They are currently holding on to the sixth-and-final seed in the SUNYAC standings. One win over Buffalo State puts the Devils in the post season. They lead Potsdam by two games, and hold the tiebreaker after sweeping the Bears. The Bears need to win at least three out of four and have two Devil losses to eliminate the Devils. Potsdam takes on Oswego and Cortland in four games this weekend.
