FREDONIA, N.Y. -- McKenna Barry and Kim Westenber each tossed a shutout to lead Cortland to a 8-0, 6-0 doubleheader sweep of Fredonia State in SUNYAC softball action Friday afternoon.
Game one vs. Cortland
In the opening game, Barry scattered two hits and fanned one Devil batter to improve to 11-1 in the circle for the Red Dragons.
Cortland scored six runs with the help of three Fredonia State errors at the top of the second. A pair of second-inning miscues and a two-run blast from Shannon Scotto put Cortland up 4-0. Another error upped the margin to 6-0 and after a two RBI single from Tori Reich that stretched the Red Dragon lead 8-0. The game ended in five innings of play in favor of Cortland.
Allie Wandell and
Emily Chelius registered the only hits for the Devils.
Chelius (3-4) suffered the loss for Fredonia State despite allowing only two earned run. She gave up six unearned runs on seven hits over five innings of work.
Game two vs. Cortland
Late runs and outstanding pitching helped Cortland to a 4-0 victory in game two on Friday.
After the scoreless four innings of play, Scotto doubled to drive in the first run of the game. A sacrifice fly and a two run home from Barry led to three more runs in the top of the seventh inning
Westenber (6-2) tossed a three-hit shutout and struck out 11 batters to pick up the win. Fredonia State starter
Vanessa Galbraith was tagged with the loss after surrendering four runs on nine hits in seven innings of work. Wandell, Chelius and Alyssa Santaigo each recorded one hit for the Devils.
The Devils (8-16) are scheduled for another home double-header on Saturday, April 20th against SUNYAC foe Oswego State for senior night at noon.
