MYRTLE BEACH S.C. -- The Fredonia State baseball team scored three runs and brought the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth inning, only to fall short in an 8-6 loss to Lesley University on Monday in Myrtle Beach.
Down 8-2 to start the inning, two singles and a walk loaded the bases with one out. After a strikeout,
Bryce Firkins drew a bases-loaded walk to force in a run.
Garrett Stuckey then cleared the bases with his fourth double of the year to cut the lead to two runs, 8-6. A strikeout would end the rally and the game.
Six different Blue Devil hitters would collect a hit. Firkins would reach base three times with two walks and a base hit.
Derrick Walters started on the mound and went three innings, striking out three. He would give up one hit an no walks, but hit three batters. Four other pitchers would come on in relief, with freshman
David Adams making his college debut in a 1-2-3 ninth, striking out two batters.
The Devils struck first when
Tyler Curtis singled home
Brady Ventura in the first.
Lesley broke through with a pair of runs in the third. The Devils would tie the game in the bottom half of the inning. Firkins led off with a walk, and would eventually come home on a balk to make the score 2-2.
Lucas Mirti came on in relief to start the fourth and surrendered a double and a walk before being relieved. Lesley would push across a run and Mirti would be credited with the loss.
Lesley tacked on two runs in the sixth, and three in the eighth -- on a three-run homerun -- to go up 8-2.
Lesley improves to 5-1.
The Devils even their record at 3-3 and have an off day before taking on Colby-Sawyer in a doubleheader on Thursday.
