Gannon's Grand Slam proves fatal to La Roche; pitchers punch out 16

MYRTLE BEACH S.C. -- Alex Gannon capped a furious comeback with a walk-off Grand Slam in the bottom of the ninth inning in a 9-5 win on Saturday. The Devils started the inning down three, scored three times and loaded the bases with no outs when the slugging junior came to the plate. He deposited his second homerun of the season over the centerfield wall to give Fredonia State its second walk-off win in four games as they improved to 3-1.

Pitching was the story through most of the game. Both teams saw their fair share of batters go down on strikes in a game that featured 30 strikeouts -- 16 by the Devils and 14 by the Redhawk hurlers.

The tone was set early when Fredonia State starting pitcher Peyton Ahlstrom struck out the first four batters he faced. He would finish with seven K's over 3 1/3 innings pitched. He gave up a homerun and double that eventually came around to score in the fourth and was relieved by Nick Syposs. Syposs went 1 2/3 innings with three strikeouts.

Nate O'Brochta went the final four, striking out six, vulturing the win.

Offensively, Brady Ventura had two doubles and Gannon and Tyler Curtis also had two hits apiece, with Curtis collecting a double. Christian Pagano added a pair of RBI.

La Roche suffered another tough loss and fell to 0-6. Four of their losses came by one run, and they led in the ninth inning of this one.

The Devils play Hartford on Monday as they continue their Spring Trip in Myrtle Beach.
