Kunisch comes up with OT winner

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Leah Kunisch scored her fifth goal of the game in the third overtime as the Fredonia State lacrosse team opened its season with a 10-9 victory over visiting Alfred University. Sydney Buchko added three goals. Freshman Ashleigh Manns earned the win with 10 saves, including three in the overtime.

The Devils scored first and built a 3-2 lead after the first quarter. Kunisch scored the first two goals, and Buchko the third.

The Devils opened the second quarter seemingly taking control with the first three scores to go up 6-2. Megan Karalus, Buchko, and Kunisch each scored.

The Saxons bounced back with a pair of goals late in the half -- one with 1:12 remaining, and one with 12 seconds on the clock.

Two more Alfred goals to open the third quarter tied the game at 6-all. After another score by Buchko, Alfred scored two more to take the lead, 8-7.

With Alfred up 9-8 late in the game, Emma Cockerel tied the game with her first goal with 1:33 left on the clock, setting up Kunisch for her heroics.

The Devils are back home this Saturday with a 1 p.m. contest vs. Hilbert College.
