WOOSTER, Ohio --
Payton Gilbert recorded her second double-double in as many nights and was named the Wooster Classic MVP as Fredonia State downed Carlow College, 76-72 in overtime, on Saturday. Gilbert finished with 18 points and 11 boards.
Grace Alexander added 25 points and was also named to the All Tournament Team.
The game was very close throughout the first half. The biggest lead for either team came just before the break With Carlow up 32-31,
Payton Gilbert made a layup, then
Alexys Neckers made a layup then a three pointer to give the Devils a six-point lead, 38-32.
Carlow's Sydney Carr made a layup just before the end of the half, with the Devils holding on to a 38-34 lead.
Both teams shot well from the floor, with the Devils hitting on 54 percent (15-28) of their shots, compared to 48 percent (14-29) for Carlow. The Devils held a 19-10 lead in rebounds but lost the turnover battle, 8-4.
Grace Alexander had 14 points, and Gilbert had 11.
Fredonia State put together a strong third quarter and would have its biggest lead of the game of 13 points following a layup by
Allie Wandell, making it 59-46 with 30 seconds left in the frame.
However, Carlow picked up the pace in the fourth, outscoring 18-7, tying the game at 66 and forcing overtime.
The Devils scored eight of their 10 points from the free-throw line in overtime, outscoring Carlow, 10-6. Neckers finished with16 points and five rebounds for the Devils.
Carlow had four players in double digits, led by Emma Aubrey with 17. Nina Cano had 14 points and 12 rebounds.
The team has its home opener on Nov. 13 vs. Chatham. Tip off is slated for 6 p.m. in Dods Hall.
