WOOSTER, Ohio -- Freshman
Annika Andersen came off the bench in her first collegiate game and poured in 17 points to pace the the Fredonia State women's basketball team to an opening-night, 89-69 win over Thiel College. Andersen was one of four Devils to score in double digits.
Peyton Gilbert had a double-double with 14 points and 13 boards, and fellow sophomore
Grace Alexander added 15 points, six assists, and three steals. Senior
Mary Culeton added 11 points and five assists.
Fredonia State jumped out to a 20-9 lead early on. They would end the fast-paced first quarter with a 30-21 lead.
Their biggest lead of the half came at 23 points following a layup by
Kyla Smith, making it 53-30.
They led by 20 or more points the third quarter, leading by as many as 33 points, before Thiel closed the gap near the end of the final quarter.
Kayley Risser had 17 points to pace the Tomcats.
Culeton shot 3-4 from long range, while the Devils went 9-25 as a team. The Devils went 12-16 from the line and outrebounded Thiel, 51-31.
Allie Wandell added seven rebounds and eight points. Freshman
Alexys Neckers started for the Devils, and contributed nine points in her college debut.
The win was also the first as a Fredonia State head coach for Sherri Nowatzki. A 1989 graduate, Nowatzki was tabbed to take over the program this season after several previous stops.
The Devils take on Carlow College at the Wooster Classic on Saturday at 2 p.m.
