Devils win in Steel City

PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- Second-half goals by Jordan Niccola and Gabby Irwin propelled the Fredonia State women's soccer team to a 2-1 win at Chatham on Tuesday. Abby Szymkowiak made seven saves in 90 minutes of play as the Devils improve to 11-7-0 on the season.

After a scoreless first half, Irwin broke through 1:33 into the second frame for her seventh goal of the year. Niccola scored in the 59th minute. Both goals were unassisted.

The Cougars finally got on the board in the 72nd minute when Ainsley Smith scored for Chatham, now 8-9-2.

Chatham held a slight favor in shots (13-11), shots on goal (8-6), and corner kicks (4-3). Katie Krecek had four saves for the hosts.

The Blue Devils open the SUNYAC Tournament this weekend with a home game vs. Buffalo State. The match is slated for a Noon start. There will be a tailgate with free hot dogs beginning at 11 a.m. In addition, there will be eight $50 Amazon Gift Cards given out during the game. Students are free with their college ID. Adults are $5 per SUNYAC rules.
