FREDONIA, N.Y. -- The New Paltz Hawks took the first SUNYAC match of the season, 3-1, from the Fredonia State women's volleyball team on Friday. They took the sets by scores of 25-22, 24-26, 25-14, and 25-18.
Kylie O'Brien led the Devils with 14 kills, and had a pair of aces along with
Sasha Zayatz and
Gabrielle Sordetto.
Elora Sherman led the team with 15 digs.
The first set was back and forth with neither team leading by more than three points until the Devils worked their way to a 20-16 lead, forcing New Paltz into a timeout.
Erin Callahan had three blocks to spark the Devils at the net at that point.
The Devils scored the next point to go up five points, 21-16, but the Hawks would finish in a flurry, scoring nine of the next 10 points to take the first set, 25-22.
In the second set, the Devils rolled out to a 6-1 lead forcing New Paltz into another timeout. The Hawks rallied to take a 9-8 lead, their first lead of the set.
Fredonia State earned back the lead at 16-14 following a kill by O'Brien. Two more lead changes and the Devils were up 23-22 after back-to-back kills by O'Brien, forcing a timeout by New Paltz.
The Hawks tied it at 24-all, before a kill by Callahan and an ace by O'Brien ended the second set, 26-24, in favor of the Devils.
The third set was all New Paltz, who jumped out to a 15-6 lead en route to a 24-14 win.
The Devils led 9-7 early in the fourth set, but could not hold off the New Paltz attack, with the visitors finishing off the set, 25-18.
The Devils fall to 2-12 and 0-1 in the SUNYAC. New Paltz improves to 11-5 and 1-0.
The Devils continue SUNYAC play with a 1 p.m. match vs. Oneonta in Dods Hall on Saturday.
