BUFFALO, N.Y. -- In the first of three Fredonia State-Buffalo State matchups this evening, the Bengals claimed the first win, coming in women's volleyball, by a 3-0 count. Both the men's and women's soccer teams also competed Wednesday evening. Each of the victories is worth two points in the Battle by the Lake.
The Bengals took the first set 29-27. Trailing 26-25, the Bengals scored four out of the last five points to take the 1-0 lead.
They would go on to take the next two sets by scores of 25-22 and 25-19.
Erin Callahan led the Devils with 11 kills.
Gabrielle Chilcott and
Gabrielle Sordetto both had six kills apiece.
Kourtney Krchniak helped the offense with 26 assists.
Elora Sherman, Sordetto, and
Kailea Sullivan each had a pair of service aces.
Chilcott paced the defense with nine digs, and Sullivan added eight.
Samantha Coakley led the Bengals with 10 kills, and Liz Schulteis had six blocks.
The Bengals strike first in the Battle by the Lake, earning two points. It was the opening conference game for both teams, with Buff State improving to 6-4 overall. The Devils drop to 1-10 and 0-1 in the SUNYAC. They travel to Pitt-Bradford to take on the Panthers and Wells College this weekend.
