FREDONIA, N.Y. -- The Fredonia State softball team split a double-header at home, against Plattsburgh on Friday. The Devils claimed Game 1 with a final score of 9-2, and lost Game 2 with a score of 13-4.
Game 1
Fredonia State came out of the gates hot, scoring four runs in the first inning and six in the second. To start off the game, the Blue Devils were able to get on base, from two back-to-back errors by the Cardinals defense.
With runners on first and third,
Alyssa Piniewski tried to steal second where she was caught in a run down. Forgetting about the runner on third,
Allie Wandell was able to steal home for the Blue Devils first run of the game.
Right after, Amber Piniewski singled, while Alyssa Piniewski advanced to second. Nicole Kumro came up to the plate and hit a triple to score both runners, and get two RBI. The next plate appearance Emily Chelius doubled to bring in Kumro, for another RBI.
In the second inning,
Maria Caviris hit a two RBI double, to score Al. Piniewski and Wandell.
The Blue Devils closed out the game in the bottom of the sixth, scoring three runs. Wandell started off the inning with a single, followed by Al. Piniewski reaching first on an error. Am. Piniewski came up to the plate with two runner on and notched a RBI single to score Wandell. Kumro cleaned everything up with a two RBI doubled, and cleared the bases.
Chelius pitched a complete game, notching six strikeouts and only allowing two runs, on five hits.
Game 2
Fredonia State opened up game two, allowing three runs in the top of the first. This seemed to be a doomed start until the Devils came to the plate and matched the Cardinals three runs.
Wandell reached first on an error by the third baseman of Plattsburgh, where Al. Piniewski was able to advance Wandell to second base, with a hard hit single. After two Devils strikeouts, Kumro hit a RBI single to score Wandell and advance Al. Piniewski to second. This set up a perfect opportunity for Chelius, who hit a two RBI doubled, to clear the bases and tie the game at three.
After the first inning, everything seemed to go in the Cardinals favor as they went on a 10-1 run to close out the remainder of the game. The Blue Devils struggled defensively, having 7 errors in a 5 inning game.
Fredonia State looks towards tomorrow, as they host SUNY Potsdam in a double-header, at noon.
Plattsburgh is now 12-16, and 8-8 in the SUNYAC.
The Devils are 12-24, and 7-8 in conference play.
