CORTLAND, N.Y. -- The Fredonia State women's basketball team took on SUNYAC-leading Cortland on Tuesday. The Devils hung in before Cortland pulled away in the second half.
Katie Pitcher and
Lauren Mickley scored 10 points apiece, and
Mackenna Nechwedowich added eight points.
Renee Park pulled down a team-high seven rebounds.
The Devils kept it close in the first quarter. Down 14-7 inside two minutes, Nechwedowich nailed a three, then converted a layup on the next possession to make it a 14-12 game. Cortland's Maggie Malone hit a jumper to put the Red Dragons up 16-12 at the end of one.
Four minutes into the second quarter, the Devils tied the game at 21-all. A three pointer by Park, two free throws from Mickley, and a layup by Pitcher completed a game-tying seven-point run.
Cortland finished the half on a 16-5 run to take a 37-26 lead into the break.
Mary Culeton had seven points and five boards to lead all scorers.
Cortland extended its lead by two points in the third, outscoring the Devils 13-11. The Devils scored the final five points of the third on another three by Nechwedowich and a layup by
Morgan Davis.
Cortland turned up the pressure in the fourth quarter opening on a 9-2 run. They closed the game scoring 13 straight before a three by Fredonia State's
Maddy Miske ended the game.
Cortland stays undefeated in the SUNYAC at 11-0, and 15-2 overall.
The Devils, 10-9 and 5-7 SUNYAC, head home this weekend to take on Oneonta and New Paltz.
