Devils fall 5-1 in opener

ANGOLA, IND. -- The Fredonia State hockey team opened up its season with a 5-1 road loss at Trine. The Thunder set the tempo early with three first-period goals and had the Devils playing catch-up the rest of the way.

The Devils received their goal -- a short handed score -- from Bryce Witman. It was the only goal for either team in the second period. Trine added a pair of scores in the third to put the game away.

Trine used even-strength scores at the 6:21 and 11:28 marks of the first to open the scoring. A power play with 18 seconds left made it 3-0.

Logan Dyck made 35 saves while surrendering five scores. For the Thunder, Elias Sandholm made 20 saves. Trine outshot the Devils, 40-21.

The Devils had no luck with their own power plays, going 0-3. The had seven penalties leading to six power play opportunities for the Thunder. Trine made four trips to the penalty box.

The same two teams meet again tomorrow for a 4 p.m. start at Trine.
