FREDONIA, N.Y. -- The Fredonia State men's soccer team triumphed 3-2 over the Alfred Saxons on Tuesday evening in the final game of the season.
The Blue Devils started the first half strong, outshooting the Saxons 8-4 while scoring twice.
Kaleb Steward scored the first goal with an assist from
Jacob Gennaro. It was Steward's sixth goal of the season.
Brian Taylor followed that up with an assist from Steward to put the Devils up, 2-0.
The Blue Devils upped the lead to 3-0 in 63rd minute on a penalty kick from Gennaro, his first goal of the season.
The Saxons would score two unanswered goals -- in the 82nd and 86th minutes -- to give the 3-2 final.
Fredonia State led in shots, 16-12, and shots on goal, 9-7.
Tanner Stutzman started in goal, making four saves without allowing a goal over 71 minutes.
Kyle Pezzulo allowed two goals and had three saves over the final 19 minutes.
"Very nice to close out the season with a win," said head coach PJ Gondek. "but we didn't need to make it quite so close at the end."
The Devils finish the season at 4-9-3.
"We will miss the seniors that have given us so much and stuck with us even during tough times," said Gondek. "We are forever grateful to them. No time to waste, though. With the players that we have returning we absolutely cannot wait for 2023."
Alfred wraps up the 2022 season with a 3-8-4 mark.
