Park, Pitcher power playoff push

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- The Fredonia State women's basketball team came up big when it mattered most. After a trailing 53-48 entering the fourth quarter, the Devils outscored Potsdam 20-6 in the fourth quarter to claim a 70-59 road victory. Renee Park scored 11 points in the decisive quarter and Katie Pitcher had eight. Pitcher finished with team-highs with 16 points and nine rebounds, and Park added 12 points and eight boards. Lauren Mickley added 14 points.

The Devils improve to 9-7 overall and 4-5 in the SUNYAC as they complete the season sweep of the Bears. Potsdam falls to 8-6 and 3-5.

Potsdam narrowly outscored the Devils, 46-43, in the first two quarters. The biggest lead either team could muster in the half was a four point lead. Fredonia State's Morgan Davis converted a layup at 5:46 of the second to put her team up, 27-23.

The third saw both teams put up 17 before the Devils took over.

Park started slow, with just one point heading into the final frame. She got the scoring going in the fourth with a quick three off the jump ball when she and Pitcher took over. Culeton hit a free throw with 26 seconds left -- other than that, Park and Pitcher scored all of the team's points in the fourth.

The Devils held a big advantage at the free-throw line, going 16-23 compared to 6-18 for the Bears. Park went 7-8. As a team the Devils shot a solid 46 percent from the field. Pitcher and Mickley combined to go 11-20 from the floor.

Potsdam was led by Jakia Howard with 18 points and 12 rebounds.

The Blue Devils take on Plattsburgh on Sunday.
