NEW PALTZ, N.Y. -- The Fredonia State women's basketball was plagued by a slow offensive performance and dropped a 49-38 road contest at New Paltz on Friday.
Isabella Wier (East Aurora, N.Y. / East Aurora) led the Devils with eight points.
Lauren Mickley (Danville, Ohio / Danville) and
Katie Pitcher (Fulton, N.Y. / Hannibal) added seven apiece.
Mackenna Nechwedowich (Berkshire, N.Y. / Newark Valley) grabbed 10 rebounds.
The Devils shot 25 percent from the floor (12-48) and 50 percent from the line (12-24). The Hawks also did not find a rhythm offensively for much of the game, shooting 27 percent (17-62) and 45 percent (11-24) from the line. The Devils also committed 26 turnovers and New Paltz had 18.
After one quarter, the game was tied at 9-all. Points were hard to come by in the second, as well, as New Paltz held a slim 20-19 lead at the break. There would be eight lead changes in the first half.
The Hawks outscored Fredonia State, 17-8, in the third to wrestle control of the game. A 12-0 run to open the quarter did the Devils in and put the host team up 32-19.
From there, the Devils would not come any closer than nine points. A layup by
Morgan Davis (Allegany, N.Y. / Allegany-Limestone) at the 2:51 mark of the third saw the Devils trail 33-25.
Fredonia State outrebounded New Paltz, 50-46.
Mary Culeton (Oswego, N.Y. / Oswego) led the defense with three steals, and also pulled down seven boards.
The Hawks stand at 9-3 overall and 5-1 in SUNYAC play.
The Devils fall to 7-6 overall and 2-4 in the SUNYAC. They have a quick turnaround due to an adjusted conference schedule and earlier cancelations across the state. The ladies play host to Plattsburgh and Potsdam in Dods Hall on Monday and Tuesday as part of a women's/men's doubleheader. The series with their North Country opponents last week was postponed.
