CORTLAND, N.Y. -- The Fredonia State women's volleyball shook of the rust and returned to the court to open this season with a 3-1 victory over Utica at the Cortland Red Dragon Invitational on Friday. The Devils dropped the first set 25-20, then swept the next three, 25-22, 25-18, and 25-21. They fell to Arcadia, 3-2, in the nightcap.
Against Utica,
Emily Jones (Plainfield, Ill. / Joliet Catholic) led the team with 13 kills, and senior
Christie Ackendorf (Amherst, N.Y. / Sweet Home) followed with 11 kills.
Sierra Keim (Shinglehouse, Pa. / Portville) led the Devils with six service aces and 11 digs.Â
Selena Brown (Queens, N.Y. / Hillcrest) paced the defense with six blocks.
The Devils kept the momentum going in the second match of the evening, winning the first two sets vs. Arcadia, 25-16 and 25-20. Arcadia regrouped and took the next three sets -- 25-21, 25-19, and 15-11 -- to claim the match.
Jones again led the team with 12 kills.
Taylor Beck (Olean, N.Y. / Portville) had four service aces and Keim led the way with 19 digs.
Setter
Kourtney Krchniak (Lockport, N.Y. / Lockport) had 36 and 27 assists, respectively, for the two matches.
The Devils wrap up things tomorrow against St. Lawrence at Noon.
