Devils hang tough vs. No. 12 Geneseo

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Fredonia State battled to the final horn Saturday in SUNYAC women's lacrosse action vs. nationally ranked Geneseo at University Stadium.

Having won two straight coming into the game, the Blue Devils (2-6 overall, 1-4 SUNYAC) ended the game with a 3-0 scoring run before falling to the Knights, 14-5. The last of the three goals -- by Erin Woods with :27 seconds left -- negated the running clock rule, which is used in women's college soccer when the margin is 10 goals or greater.

Allison Coon and Madeline Haney had the other goals during the late flurry. Coon finished with three goals and one assist.

Blue Devil goalkeeper Emily Carr was credited with 12 saves and a team-high five ground balls, Julie Culver added four ground balls, Hannah Mikulec was credited with four caused turnovers and three ground balls, while Sydney Buchko had four draw controls and Bri Emery three.

Hannah Marafioti had four goals and two assist for Geneseo. Two of the goals came while the Knights (4-2, 4-1) were playing a man down due to a yellow card. The Knights are No. 12 in the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association's NCAA Division III rankings.

The Blue Devils are back in action Wednesday at Buffalo State, a team Fredonia State defeated 14-8 on April 14 at University Stadium.
