FREDONIA, N.Y. -- A walk-off single by
Amber Piniewski capped a two-run rally as Fredonia State defeated Brockport 7-6 in the first game of a SUNYAC doubleheader Thursday at Blue Devil Field. The Blue Devils dropped the nightcap, 15-4.
After Brockport broke a 5-5 tie with a run in the top of the seventh,
Amber Recksiek drew a lead-off walk and
Maria Caviris reached safely on a bunt single. A walk by
Eva FitzSimmons loaded the bases ahead of a sacrifice fly by
Nicole Kumro to score pinch-runner
Amanda Eastman with the tying run. Piniewski then delivered a liner inside the right-field line, her third hit of the game, as the Blue Devils improved to 3-6 overall and 3-2 in the conference.
Caviris, who scored the winning run, earned the win with one scoreless inning in relief of Fredonia State starting pitcher
Katie Yudin, who aided her own cause with a two-run homer. Kumro also hit a two-run homer and Caviris and FitzSimmons had two hits each.
In Game 2, the Blue Devils and starting pitcher
Emily Chelius fell behind 3-0 in the first inning before rallying to take a 4-3 lead. RBI hits by FitzSimmons accounted for the first two Fredonia State runs. Kumro gave her team the lead with a two-run single to cap a three-run third inning.
Brockport regained the lead with three runs in the fourth and blew the game open with nine runs in the top of the fifth, aided by three Fredonia State errors. Yudin, FitzSimmons, and
Syd Merkley led the Blue Devil offense with two hits each. Chelius was tagged with the loss as her team fell to 3-7 and 3-3. Brockport is 3-3 in the conference, the only games it has played so far this spring.
Next up for the Blue Devils is a SUNYAC doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Oswego State.
