Haney joins century club in 14-8 win over Bengals

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- For the second straight game, a Fredonia State women's lacrosse player reached the century mark in career points in a win at home.

Fifth-year senior Madeline Haney had four goals and two assists -- giving her exactly 100 career points -- in a 14-8 SUNYAC win Tuesday over Buffalo State at University Stadium. Haney became the 22nd Blue Devil to reach the milestone, joining teammate Allison Coon on the career scoring list. Coon reached the milestone last Saturday in a 18-0 win over Wells.

The Blue Devils rallied from an early 3-0 deficit Tuesday to improve to 2-5 overall and 1-3 in the SUNYAC. The loss dropped Buffalo State to 0-4 in the conference and 0-5 overall.

Sophomore goalkeeper Emily Carr was stout between the pipes with 14 saves, several of them during a decisive 7-0 run by her teammates which turned a 4-1 deficit into an 8-4 lead. Haney, Sarah English, and Bri Emery had two goals each during the run.

With her team holding a comfortable 13-7 lead, Haney struck for her milestone point with a goal from in front of the net with 1:19 left in the game. Her teammates rushed to her to celebrate as they did a short while later as the final horn sounded and they rushed Carr.

English and Emery finished with three goals each and Julie Culver had two goals for the Blue Devils. Sydney Buchko was credited with a game-high six draw controls and collected four ground balls to share the team high with Carr. Emery had five draw controls and Tessa Brady led the defense with two caused turnovers.

Julia Wachna had four goals and one assist for Buffalo State.

The start of the game was delayed for three hours as Buffalo State awaited the results of COVID-19 tests before they were permitted to leave Buffalo for Fredonia. The tests are administered to student-athletes weekly -- and in some cases, more than once per week -- as per SUNYAC safety protocol.
