Comeback bid falls short in SUNYAC Semifinals

GENESEO, N.Y. – The Fredonia State Women's Soccer Team (10-7-3, 5-3-1 SUNYAC) couldn't overcome a first half deficit in the SUNYAC Semifinals on Wednesday afternoon. SUNY Geneseo (14-2-1, 8-0-1 SUNYAC) converted three goals in the first stanza to solidify its victory.

The home team got on the board quickly. At 1:51, Geneseo earned a corner kick that found a waiting Mackenzie Griffin. Griffin let the ball fly from the 18 and placed it perfectly in the net.

The visitors kept the pressure on, but Sabrina Suriani (Manlius, N.Y.) was up to the challenge. In the 8th minute, the junior closed out on a streaking Geneseo forward and made a textbook save.

In the 13th minute, Geneseo struck again. This time Griffin found teammate Liv Raucci, who sent a buzzing shot in from the 18.

Five minutes later, Fredonia had its first great opportunity of the game. Lexi Lindamer (Lewiston, N.Y.) sent a great ball in from the left wing that Gabby Alston (Niskayuna, N.Y.) got a head on. The forward's attempt ended up going wide right.

Geneseo's scoring continued in the 21st minute when the Blue Devils misplayed a clearance. Hannah Sullivan took advantage of the opportunity and placed a perfect shot into the left side of the net.

Five minutes later again, Alston had another opportunity. The junior took a shot from the top of the 18 that got deflected along the way. The deflection pulled the Geneseo keeper off their line, but Bennett was able to make the play.

In the 32nd minute it looked as if Geneseo would extend its lead when Suriani got pulled of their line on a corner kick. Nicki Barlow (Penfield, N.Y.) held their spot on the back post and was able to record the team save.

Towards the end of the first half, Suriani made another solo effort to keep the score intact. The keeper made a diving save on a Geneseo shot and found the rebound coming back their way. Following a kick save, Suriani dove on the ball to thwart the attack.

In the final seconds, Fredonia State had its best chance of the half. Off a corner kick, Katie Sellers (Glenmont, N.Y.) flicked a ball across the Geneseo net. The attack fell short when no one was there to put the ball away.

The second half started quiet with both teams fighting for the advantage in possession.

23 minutes into the half, Fredonia State came alive. Starting with a clearance from their own end, the Blue Devils found Sellers in the middle of the field.

The freshman faced up and found Alston. Alston then place a perfect through-ball to Maddy Payne (Buffalo, N.Y.) who fought through contact and got the visitors on the board.

In back to back minutes, Emily Kwiatkowski (Lake View, N.Y.) had two key blocks and Alston sent a great shot just left of net.
With just under eight minutes to play, the Devils struck again. Alston sent a bending ball in from the right-wing finding Sellers. Sellers timed the ball perfectly and connected on the header to get within one of Geneseo.

The final goal proved to be Fredonia State's last good chance of the game.

Fredonia State finished with 13 shots and six on goal.

Suriani closed out her stellar season with 11 saves over 90 minutes, totaling to 112 on the season.
