Volleyball downs Oneonta in straight sets

FREDONIA, N.Y. – The Fredonia State Women's Volleyball Team improved to 5-1 in SUNYAC play and 9-8 overall with a 3-0 victory over Oneonta (3-13, 2-2 SUNYAC). The set scores were 25-23, 25-14, and 25-18.

The Blue Devils started hot, going up 5-0 in the first set. Oneonta came firing back and eventually evened the score at 11. The two teams exchanged points for the remainder of the set until they were deadlocked at 23.

The next two points set the tone for the rest of the match. Fredonia got two straight kills from Emily Jones (Plainfield, Ill.) and Christie Ackendorf (Amherset, N.Y.) and never looked back. The Blue Devils scored eight straight points between the two sets and started the second set up 6-0.

The second set proved to be the team's biggest margin of victory, but the third was their most efficient. The team combined for 15 kills and a hitting percentage of .261.

A key piece to the home team's success was Kourtney Krchniak (Lockport, N.Y.) and her control of the offense. The sophomore entered the match leading the SUNYAC in assists per set, averaging 7.58. She stayed on pace tonight by recording 32 assists.

Ackendorf also had an outstanding night, earning a .476 hitting percentage after hitting 11 kills with one error on 21 attempts. Jones matched her teammate with 11 kills.

Olivia Emley (Olean, N.Y.) anchored the defense with 15 digs.

Selena Brown (Queens, N.Y.) added four total blocks to maintain her place on the SUNYAC leaderboard as well. The senior currently ranks first in the conference with 62 total blocks and second with 1.01 blocks per set.

Fredonia State will play at home again tomorrow, hosting New Paltz at noon.
