Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women’s soccer earns a point on the road

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The Fredonia State Women's Soccer Team (8-5-2, 3-2-1 SUNYAC) travelled to New Paltz on Friday afternoon for a conference matchup. After 110 minutes, neither team could break the tie and the game ended in a draw.

The Blue Devils were in control early and made their chances count.

In the eighth minute, Bri Grazen (Lancaster, N.Y.) collected a ball on top of the 18-yard box. She then found teammate, Sophie Richiusa (Penfield, N.Y.) who was five yards upfield, unmarked.

Richiusa sent a screaming ball past the outstretched New Paltz keeper to put her team up 1-0.

The visitors kept the lead going into the half after recording six more shots and getting two saves from keeper Sabrina Suriani (Manlius, N.Y.).

The second half proved to be the home team's turn.

Roughly 16 minutes into the second stanza, the home team got on the board. Katie Buquicchio scored the equalizer after finishing a misplayed ball near the goal line.

From there, both teams battled until the end of overtime.

With two and a half minutes to play in regulation, Fredonia State got one of their best chances of the game. Gabby Alston (Niskayuna, N.Y.) had a breakaway opportunity but Hawks' keeper Kyra Russo thwarted the attack.

The teams exchanged opportunities down the stretch, but 110 minutes wasn't enough for either team to emerge victorious.

Coach Case remarked, "a point on the road against a great team is a good thing", following his team's efforts.

Fredonia State finished action with 17 shots, nine on goal and four corner kicks.

Suriani was strong in net again, recording 10 saves.

The Blue Devils continue their conference weekend tomorrow at Oneonta at 1:00 PM.
