MYRTLE BEACH, S.C.-- The Fredonia State Blue Devils won 19-8 and 10-7 in their doubleheader against the Lehman College Lightning in Myrtle Beach on Saturday.
Trailing 3-0 in Game 1, the Blue Devils tied the game in the third inning. A triple by
Domenic Monti (Lancaster, N.Y. / Lancaster) was followed by an RBI single by
Tyler Phillips (Buffalo, N.Y. / Cleveland Hill).
Trevor Bradshaw (Oswego, N.Y. / Oswego) walked and a double steal set up
Pat Bigham (Rochester, N.Y. / Greece Odyssey) for a two-run single.
The Blue Devils took the lead for good with three runs in the fourth inning.
Matt Heffernan (Mattituk, N.Y. / Mattituk) singled with two outs to start the rally. A hit-and-run single by Monti put runners on the corners. A Lightning error off the bat of pinch-hitter
Brian Chatt scored one run. Phillips doubled to bring home two more runs for a 6-3 Fredonia State lead. The Blue Devils put the game away in the final three innings, including a pair of six-run innings.
Monti, Phillips, and Bigham each had three hits with Phillips and Bigham collecting four RBI each. Southpaw
Kenneth Ynoa (Bronx, N.Y. / Bronx School for Law, Government and Justice) picked up the win in relief of starter
Sam Cestra (Pittsford, N.Y. / Pittsford Mendon).
In Game 2, the Blue Devils trailed 2-0 before scoring six times in the fourth inning.
Billy Clifford (Syracuse, N.Y. / Baldwinsville) stated the rally with a lead-off single and advanced to third on a double by Monti. Tyler Murphy (Albany, N.Y. / Colonie Central) brought home both runners with a triple, then scored on a single by Chatt. A two-out, bases loaded triple by
James Mitchell (Camden, N.Y. / Camden) capped the rally and gave the Blue Devils a 6-2 lead.
The Lightning retook the lead with five runs in the top of the fifth. The Blue Devils answered in the bottom of the inning with an RBI double by Chatt and an RBI triple by
Kole Brink (Frewsburg, N.Y. / Frewsburg) to take an 8-7 lead. A sacrifice fly by
Russell Mistretta (Buffalo, N.Y. / Canisius) to score Brink made it 9-7. An RBI single by Chatt, his third hit of the game, scored an insurance run in the sixth inning.
Freshman right-hander
Adam Goot (Cassadaga Valley, N.Y. / Cassadaga Valley) earned his first collegiate win and Murphy picked up a save. Goot struck out two in 1 2/3 innings. Murphy fanned one in one inning of work.
