ROANOKE, Va. -- Fredonia State split a pair of games Friday on the first day of the 2020 softball season.

The Blue Devils defeated Pitt.-Bradford, 4-2, in the second of two games at Mountain Mash at Roanoke College. The host Maroons defeated the Blue Devils, 7-1, in Fredonia State's season opener.

Katie Yudin pitched in and out of jams while standing 10 UPB runners during the 4-2 win in Friday.s second game. She yielded 10 hits, walked three, and hit a batter, but still had enough to escape a bases-loaded jam in the top of the seventh.

The Blue Devils broke a 2-2 tie in the fourth inning on an RBI single by Victoria Pauwels, then added an insurance run in the fifth on an RBI double by Eva FitzSimmons. It was the second hit of the game for FitzSimmons.

The Blue Devils fell behind 1-0 in the first inning against Roanoke before a two-out single by Yudin evened the score at 1-1 in the top of the third. The host Maroons retook the lead 2-1 in the last of the third with a lead-off triple followed by a single. They added  -- and chased starting pitcher Sam Seegar from the game -- with two runs in the fourth inning to take a 4-1 lead. Emily Chelius, moving from right field into the circle for her first collegiate pitching appearance, allowed three runs in the last of the fifth.

In addition to the single by Yudin, the Blue Devils managed only one other hit -- a single by Maria Caviris -- off two Roanoke pitchers. The Maroons also pitched a three-hitter in a 4-0 win over Pitt.-Bradford earlier Friday.
