Here comes the Judd

CORTLAND, N.Y. -- The first collegiate goal by sophomore Chandler Judd proved to be the difference as Fredonia State kept its SUNYAC playoff chances alive with a 3-2 win Friday over the Cortland Red Dragons.

Appearing in his 23rd game over two seasons, Judd scored from just in front of the net at 18:31 of the second period to break a 2-2 tie. The win lifted the Blue Devils to 4-8-3 in the SUNYAC (7-10-7 overall).

With 11 points, they moved to within one point of the sixth and final playoff spot -- currently shared by Plattsburgh and Potsdam with 12 points each. Potsdam's has completed its season while Plattsburgh faces Morrrisville on Saturday.

The Blue Devils conclude their regular season when they visit Oswego at 7 p.m. Saturday.

Victor Tracy and Ethan Kirbis had Fredonia State's other two goals while Jacob Haynes picked up a pair of assists in his bid to reach the 100-point mark in his career. He has 97 heading in Saturday's game.

Anton Rosen made 34 saves in the Fredonia State net.

Tracy put the Blue Devils on top 1-0 at 5:01 of the first period with a power-play goal on a shot through a screen from top of the right faceoff circle. Charlie Manley and Jacob Haynes picked up assists on the goal. For Haynes, it extended his points streak to 16 straight games.

Haynes led a rush out of the defensive end to set up Kirbis for his fifth goal of the season at 14:16 of the first period, a shot from the high slot. Hugo Gamache was given the secondary assist.

Cortland pulled even on goals by Alex Storjohann and Stefano Alonzi before Judd put the Blue Devils back on top 3-2. He scored from the doorstep after Cortland goaltender Nick Modica mishandled the puck and it was retrieved by the Blue Devils. Matt Letmanski and Tyler Riter were credited with assists.
