FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Four area high school basketball games, three varsity and one junior varsity, will be played at Fredonia State on Saturday as part of the annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day celebration on campus.
All the high school teams are members of the Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association.
Here is the Saturday schedule:
Dods Hall
10 a.m. -- Fredonia vs. Cassadaga Valley junior varsity
11:30 a.m. -- Fredonia vs. Cassadaga Valley varsity
Steele Hall
10 a.m. -- Pine Valley vs. Sherman varsity
11:30 a.m. -- Clymer vs. Cattaraugus-Little Valley varsity
In addition to the high school games, a group of elementary school students will play a mini-game during halftime of the Fredonia State vs. Oswego women's basketball game in Dods Hall. The women's game is scheduled for a 4 o'clock start. It will be preceded by the 2 p.m. men's game between Fredonia State and Oswego.
The day will include campus tours and a panel of student-athletes from other Fredonia State women's team, scheduled for 1 p.m. in the Bob Steele Multi-Purpose Room. Lunch will be served.
Nationally, the 34th annual National Girls & Women in Sports Day will be celebrated on February 5. On the Women's Sports Foundation website, it states "This (NGWSD) celebration inspires girls and women to play and be active, to realize their full power. The confidence, strength and character gained through sports participation are the very tools girls and women need to become strong leaders in sports and life."
Fredonia State's celebration will be held one week early to take advantage of the SUNYAC home games.
