FREDONIA, N.Y. - Leading 14-12 and one point away from victory in the fifth and final set, the Fredonia women's volleyball team surrendered four consecutive points to fall three sets to two against the red-hot Oneonta Red Dragons. Oneonta improved to 15-3 overall and 3-0 in the SUNYAC, while the Devils fell to 7-9, and 1-2 in conference play.
The set scores were 25-20, 27-25, 23-25, 14-25, and 14-16.
Emma Booth led the team with 11 kills, while
Emily Jones had 10 to go along with six aces and three blocks.
Emily Leone had nine kills and a team-best six blocks.
Kourtney Krchniak had 32 assists.
Booth,
Kaitlin Patt, and
Sierra Keim had 12 digs apiece.
Fredonia led the majority of the first set, winning 25-19.
Early in the second set, the Devils found themselves trailing 13-6. They would score six of the next seven points and trail by two, 14-12. The Red Dragons would hold on and eventually lead 25-24. Fredonia clutched up and scored the final three points, winning the set 27-25, the final point coming as Leone and
Caroline Roy recorded a block to put the Devils up two sets to none.
Oneonta came out fast in the third set seeming to take control with a 9-2 lead. After trading points to make it 10-3, Jones stepped up to the service line and the Devils rattled off 10-straight points to take a 13-10 lead. Jones finished the rally with a powerful spike from the back row. However, Oneonta would come out on top 25-23, then cruised to a 25-14 win in the fourth set before the late rally gave them the victory in the final set.Â
"It's disappointing we don't have anything to show for it," said head coach
Geoff Braun, "but we played well. Our defense was very strong, our serving is something we've been focusing on, and today it was effective in taking their middles out of their offense at times."
The Devils travel to Brockport and Geneseo next weekend.
