FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Fredonia State rallied from a pair of two-goal deficits Friday to claim a 3-3 tie with Plattsburgh in SUNYAC women's soccer. A goal by
Melanie Minotti with :06 left in regulation as the Blue Devils -- who started seven freshmen due to a recent injury bug -- erased a 3-1 deficit. They also trailed 2-0 earlier in the game.
Sophia Alessi and
Lauren Cullinan scored the first two Fredonia goals while
Abbey Monahan made five saves the final 38 minutes in the Fredonia net. She relieved starter
Sabrina Suriani, who also stopped five shots. Kirsten Villemaire, Abigail Seamans, and Allison Seidman scored the Plattsburgh goals. Cardinal goalkeeper Julia Ennis was credited with two saves.
The tie left the Blue Devils at 3-4-1 and the Cardinals at 4-2-1 heading into action Saturday -- Plattsburgh at Buffalo State and the Blue Devils at home vs. Potsdam. Both games start at 1 p.m.
Plattsburgh's Villemaire opened the scoring with a perfectly placed ball into the top left corner from a wide angle in the fifth minute. It was her sixth goal of the season. Seamans made it 2-0 in with a header the 59th minute off a cross by Katie Matott after Suriani charged out to cover Matott and vacated the crease.
Fredonia State's first goal came in the 65th minute on a play than began in the midfield. Cullinan played the ball to
Gabby Alston, who passed back to Cullinan in full throttle up the right side. Cullinan then crossed to Alessi, who one-timed a shot inside the left post with a defender on her hip. It was Alessi's third goal of the season.
The Blue Devils' momentum was short lived. Seidman converted a three-way play with Matott and Villemaire to re-establish the Cardinals' two-goal lead, at 3-1, in the 66th minute.
Cullinan netted her first goal of the season with a long, arcing shot in the 80th minute to make it 3-2 before Minotti scored the equalizer, set up by Alston, with another long shot. The play began with a goal kick by Monahan and included a couple of touches by Blue Devils before Minotti connected.
