PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. -- The SUNYAC portion of the men's soccer season began with Fredonia State taking a 2-0 loss Friday at Plattsburgh.
Chris Robertson scored the first goal and the Plattsburgh benefited from an own goal for their second goal resulting in the important league win. Ryan Wilson made five saves to earn the shutout while Fredonia State's
Ty Bentham had four stops.
"We really got off to a good start," Fredonia State Head Coach
P.J. Gondek said. "We had them pinned down and we were right on the doorstep but came up empty."
An injury to center back
Imani Paluku early in the game necessitated changes in the Fredonia formation. Gondek said with
Jackson Retzer moved to defense from midfield, the Blue Devils "became less organized and dangerous."
Both Plattsburgh goals came after good scoring changes by the Blue Devils. Robertson's goal in the 56th minute was set up by Jimmy Marchena. Plattsburgh's second goal came in the 79th minute. A corner kick which appeared to be going wide was headed last Bentham by a Blue Devil defender.
In the end, the Blue Devils were outshot 12-7 yet had a 7-3 advantage in corners.
"We will put this behind us," Gondek said, "and try to get our three points tomorrow." The Blue Devils take on Potsdam at 1 p.m.
