Devils bounce Buff State

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The Fredonia women's volleyball team opened conference play with a 3-1 victory over Buffalo State on Tuesday. After dropping the first set 25-20, the Devils swept the next three in their SUNYAC opener.

They won the sets by scores of 25-19, 25-20, and 25-19.

"We earned a gritty road win tonight," said head coach Geoff Braun. "We played a little tight but I think we learned a lot about SUNYAC volleyball tonight and what it takes to be successful."

Fredonia improves to 7-6 overall, while the Bengals fall to 3-8.

Emma Booth (Hamburg, N.Y. / Frontier) led the attack with 14 kills, while Emily Leone (Le Roy, N.Y. / LeRoy) had eight. Kourtney Krchniak (Lockport, N.Y. / Lockport) was credited with 39 assists. Kaitlin Patt (Spencerport, N.Y. / Spencerport) had four aces.

Caroline Roy (Glenwood, N.Y. / Springville) led the defense with seven block assists and Leone had five. Sierra Keim (Shinglehouse, Pa. / Portville) had 20 digs.

The Bengals did not have any one offensive weapon to rely on, but rather had kills by committee. Eight different Bengals were credited with four kills apiece.

It was the fifth straight win for the streaking Devils. They travel to Pitt-Bradford this Friday. The win also gave the Fredonia State the first two points this year's in the Battle by the Lake competition. Fredonia won the cup the first four years before the Bengals took it home for the first time in the 2018-2019 academic year.
