Hunting trip ends in 2-2 tie

NEW YORK, N.Y. -- Fredonia State rallied for a 2-2 tie with Hunter in the first game of the 2019 men's soccer season. The game ended after two overtimes.

Jackson Retzer scored both Blue Devil goals, the first from Conrad Rathbun in the 49th minute and the tying goal in the 53rd minute on a free kick.

Ty Bentham was in net for Fredonia and made six saves.

"We had an extremely slow start on a very hot day," Fredonia State Head Coach P.J. Gondek said. "We came out with a different attitude at halftime and changed the game.".

Hunter led 2-0 on goals by Blaise Enama and Jesus Patino Muniz. Enama scored in the 15th minute while Muniz converted a penalty kick with eight minutes left in the first half.

It was the first meeting ever between the two schools. The Blue Devils are back in action noon Saturday when then face Baruch College, also a first-ever meeting, back at the Randall's Island complex.

"Tomorrow will be tough," Gondek said, "with the amount of energy expended today but this is what we will need to do in the SUNYAC. It will be an opportunity for the younger players to show."
