FREDONIA, N.Y. – Fredonia lost both ends of its SUNYAC softball doubleheader Sunday to Geneseo, 7-4 in the first game and 4-0 in the nightcap.
Nicole Kumro had a hit in each game while
Maria Caviris had two hits in the opener for the Blue Devils, who fell to 7-13 overall and 2-4 in the conference. Geneseo improved to 18-6 overall and 6-2 SUNYAC.
Here's how it happened:
GAME ONE
- Fredonia took a 1-0 lead on a single by Katie Yudin and two-out double by Caviris.
- A lead-off triple by Brooke Wolff and a sacrifice fly by Alyssa Persich tied the score 1-1 in the top of the third.
- Geneseo took the lead for good with four runs in the fifth. Danni Napoli had a two-run single during the rally.
- The Blue Devils cut into their deficit with two runs in the fifth and one more in the sixth. Back-to-back singles by Caviris and Amber Piniewski led off the fifth before Karli Murray and Sydney Merkley brought home the runs with infield groundouts. A single by Maddy O'Heir and a two-out single by Kumro made it 5-4 in the sixth.
- Geneseo scored two insurance runs in the top of the seventh on a single by Napoli and a homer by Hannah Elmer.
- Taylor Moore was the winning pitcher. Yudin took the loss.
GAME TWO
- Geneseo took a 2-0 lead on a pair of solo homers, Ashlyn Kersch in the first inning and Napoli in the third. A three-base error followed by Taylor Fedor's sacrifice fly gave Geneseo a 3-0 lead in the fourth.
- Kersch launched a long homer down the right-field foul line to increase Geneseo's lead to 4-0 in the fifth. She was solid in the circle, too, with a two-hit, five-strikeout performance. She retired the last 10 batters of the game.
- Fredonia's only hits off Kersch came in the fourth, singles by Maull and Nicole Kumro. Sam Seegar was the losing pitcher.
