Yudin's pitching, timely hitting keys to 6-0 win

CLERMONT, Fla.Katie Yudin pitched a two-hit shutout as Fredonia defeated Elizabethtown, 6-0, on Saturday morning, the Blue Devils' first game at The Spring Games.

Eva FitzSimmons and Jules Vassallo each had two RBI for the Blue Devils (1-2), who scored all of their runs with two outs. Yudin's complete-game effort included seven strikeouts and one walk. She limited the Blue Jays (3-6) to two singles, never more than one in an inning.

The Blue Devils are back in action Saturday afternoon vs. Simpson.

DEVILS IN THE DETAILS
  • FitzSimmons jumped on the first pitch leading off the second inning and doubled over the left-fielders head. With two outs and two strikes, Vassallo tripled into the right-field corner for the first Fredonia run. Sam Seegar blooped a single to center to make it 2-0.
  • More two-out magic ensued in the Fredonia fourth. Amber Piniewski ground a single into left, stole second, and scored when Vassallo dropped a double into right-center. It was Vassallo's second extra-base hit and second RBI.
  • Fredonia used its legs and more timely inning to put up a three-spot in the fifth, all with two outs. A bunt single by Karli Murray got things started, followed a single by Rhianna Paoletti off the shortstop's glove. Murray pulled off a delayed steal, then stole home as Paoletti was stealing second. FitzSimmons collected her second RBI with a single to left. Yudin then delivered a single to center and FitzSimmons scored to make it 6-0.
QUICK TAKES
  • Paoletti made a nice over-the-shoulder running catch for the first out of the fourth.
  • The game ended on a sliding catch by right-fielder Marissa Sultana with two Elizabethtown runs on base.
  • Now living in the Clermont area, former Fredonia groundskeeper and Blue Devil Field architect Mel Thayer was in attendance.
