CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Fredonia dropped a doubleheader Saturday to Case Western Reserve, 19-0 in the first game and 5-3 in the nightcap, in college non-conference baseball.
The Blue Devils had only five hits in the opener, two by
Kevin Yirinec. They led 3-0 in the second game, only to have host the Spartans rally in the middle innings.
Trevor Bradshaw and
Russell Mistretta had three hits each.
Fredonia fell to 9-7 while CWR improved to 10-6.
GAME ONE
The closest Fredonia came to scoring came in the sixth. Bradshaw had a lead-off double, followed by a single by
Nicolas Fiore, to put runners at the corners with no outs. CWR's Matt Levine retired the next three en route to seven shutout innings.
The Blue Devils had runners in scoring position in the third (
Domenic Monti single and stolen base), the fourth inning (lead-off double by Yirinec, advanced to third on a ground out with two outs), the seventh (
Jon Morrison hit by pitch, followed by a groundout), and the eighth (another double by Yirinec).
Sam Cestra was the Fredonia starting pitcher and took the loss.
GAME TWO
The Blue Devils got a clutch two-out, two-strike hit from Bradshaw to cap their three-run rally in the second. Bradshaw, who had singled to lead off the game, lined an opposite-field single into left field to score Mistretta, who had lined a double over the right-fielder's head, and DJ Shiershing. A lead-off double by
William Clifford and an RBI single by
Brian Chatt got the scoring started.
The Blue Devils put runners at first and third in the third and the fifth innings but did not score.
CWR scored two in the fifth and three in the sixth to lead the lead, Jacob Lott delivered a two-run single to CWR on top for good 4-3. Jake Ryan followed with an RBI single. He also had an RBI double in the fifth following a sacrifice fly by Rocco Maue..
Anthony Kinney started and pitched two scoreless innings.
Christopher Kuchta followed and allowed one run in two innings.
Nick Ciraolo was tagged with the loss after giving up four runs -- two earned -- on six hits over 1 2/3 innings.
Kenneth Jaroszek (1 1/3 innings) and
Kenneth Ynoa (1 inning) each pitched scoreless relief.
Yirinec led off the ninth with a double deep into the gap in left-center but was stranded. The hit extended his hitting streak to five games (8 for 19).
WHAT'S NEXT?
Another westward trip on Interstate 90, although a shorter one, is on the offing Sunday as the Blue Devils travel to Penn State Behrend. First pitch is 2 o'clock.
