OSWEGO, N.Y. – Max Novick had two goals and an assist to lead nationally ranked Oswego to a 4-1 SUNYAC men's hockey win over Fredonia.
Ryan Dunn (Rockland, Mass) had the Fredonia goal while
Eric Bogart (London, Ont.) made 28 saves for the Blue Devils (11-5-4 overall, 5-4-2 SUNYAC).
David Richer made 16 saves for the Lakers (16-3-1 overall, 9-2-0 SUNYAC), ranked No. 3 in both NCAA Division III men's hockey polls.
Special teams were the difference during the first period. Oswego killed off two straight penalties, including a 5-on-3 Fredonia advantage for nearly a minute.Just over a minute later, Oswego converted a power play to take a 1-0 lead on a goal by Novick. Josh Nenadal made it 2-0 for the Lakers later in the period with an even-strength goal.
Fredonia had as many shots – 12 – as penalty minutes through two periods.
Dunn made it 2-1 just two minutes into the third period with a shot into the short side from the right circle.
Luke Rivera (Pacific Palisades, Calif.) and
Max Blitz (Chino Hills, Calif.) picked up assists.
Novick's second goal of the game, also on a power play, looked strikingly similar to his first one – a shot from the high slot through traffic in front of Bogart. Nenadal scored into an empty net with 44 seconds left.
The loss, combined with Buffalo State's 4-2 win at Cortland, dropped Fredonia into a tie for fifth place with Brockport, which was a 6-1 winner at Morrisville. The Blue Devils, who have a game in hand on Brockport, visit Cortland on Saturday.
