GENESEO, N.Y. — Fredonia State's penalty kill this season has been an immovable force, On the other hand, Geneseo's power play has been an unstoppable object.
The unstoppable object -- in the form of hockey pucks -- won the day Saturday in Geneseo's 5-2 SUNYAC men's hockey win at the Ira S. Wilson Ice Arena. The Knights went 4 of 5 on the power play, three of the goals coming in the second period to erase a 2-0 Fredonia State lead.
Conlan Keenan (2 goals, 2 assists) and Andrew Romano (1 goal, 3 assists) had four points each for the Knights (6-1-1 overall, 4-1-1 SUNYAC), ranked No. 2 in NCAA Division III.
Jacob Haynes and
Charlie Manley had one goal and one assist each for the Blue Devils (1-5-1 overall, 0-5-1 SUNYAC).
While Fredonia State came into the game with Division III's fifth-best penalty killing unit (30 of 31 for 96.8 percent), Geneseo came in with the top-ranked power-play unit at 36. 5 percent. Neither of those special teams factored into the first period as Fredonia State controlled the early tempo.
The Blue Devils' fast start finally paid off when Haynes won a puck along the left half-wall, slid a pass around the boards to
Josh Biasillo, and one-timed a return pass from Biasillo from inside the left faceoff circle. It was Haynes's second goal of the season and gave the Blue Devils a 1-0 lead at 10:05 of the first period.
The Blue Devils took a 2-0 lead on a power-play goal by Manley. It came after Haynes won a faceoff in the offensive end and combined with
Ethan Kirbis to feed Manley, who skated into the high slot before firing on net for his third goal of the year.
Smarting from a 4-2 loss Friday at Buffalo State and down 2-0 after one period, Geneseo flexed its muscle -- and took advantage of Blue Devils miscues -- to score four times in the second period. A power-play goal by Andrew Romano at 6:32 of the second period, broke a string of 30-straight penalty kills by the Blue Devils. Romano then set up Conlan Keenan as the Blue Knights pulled even 2-2 at 10:19 of the period.
The Blue Knights got a second power-play goal when Chris Perna fed Romano behind the net and Romano sent a pass into the slot onto the stick of Keenan, who wristed the puck inside the far post for a 3-2 Geneseo lead. A slapshot by Matthew Doran accounted for the fourth goal of the period -- and the third power-play goal -- to increase the Geneseo lead to 4-2.
Tyson Empey added to the Geneseo's power-play success with the only goal of the third period to complete the scoring.
Next up for the Blue Devils is a trip to Castleton, Vermont where they will play Curry at 4 p.m. next Friday. They will remain in Castleton next Saturday to face either the host Spartans or Nazareth College.
