Devils advance to tourney title game over #15 Curry

RUTLAND, Vt. -- Fredonia State advanced to the championship game of the Castleton University Tournament with a 1-0 shootout win over No. 15 Curry College.

Jasper Korican-Barlay was the lone scorer in two shootout rounds following regulation and a pair of overtimes -- a 5-on-5 session to determine a true winner, followed by a 3-and-3 to break the tie for tournament purposes.

The game is officially recorded as a tie as well as a shutout, the first in 38 career starts for Fredonia State senior Anton Rosen. He made 28 saves while Curry's Vladimir Cibulka made 32 stops.

It was also the third meeting of teacher vs. pupil between Fredonia State Head Coach Jeff Meredith and Curry's T.J. Manastersky, a former Blue Devil assistant coach. Meredith's teams lead the series, 1-0-2.

Meredith's team played on even terms with Manastersky's Colonels, who entered the game at 8-1-0. The Blue Devils outshot Curry, 13-8, in the scoreless first period. Rosen kept the game scoreless with a sliding pad save on a breakaway by Joey Vizzo late in the second period. Both goaltenders also came up big in the third period.

Cibulka flashed the leather several times late in the game with glove saves that kept the Blue Devils (1-5-2) off the board, including one late in the first overtime.

The shootout began with Fredonia State's Malcolm Arseneau and Curry's Vizzo failing to score. Korican-Barlay beat Cibulka with a shot that deflected up and over the goaltender before Rosen stopped Mic Curran to send his team into tomorrow's championship game at 4 p.m.

The Blue Devils will play the winner of Friday night's second game between Nazareth College and tournament host Castleton, coached by Bill Silengo, another former Blue Devil assistant under Meredith.
