FREDONIA, N.Y. -- The Fredonia State men's basketball team needed an extra frame before prevailing in a 91-88 victory over visiting D'Youville College in its season-opening win on Tuesday.
De'Quan Smith and
Dydy Bryan scored 26 and 23 points, respectively, to power the offense. Smith connected on five buckets from beyond the arc.
Moussa Samassa added 14 points and
Tyler Roberts had 12.
Bryan led the team with nine rebounds, and Samassa grabbed eight boards.
With the game tied at 78, both Bryan and
Adam Braniecki attempted contested layups that rolled off the rim just before time expired to end regulation.
The Devils would go on to outscore the Spartans 13-10 in the overtime, with nine of those points coming from the free-throw line.
Free throws played a big factor in the game, with Fredonia State converting 22 of 29 (76 percent), and D'Youville hitting on 25 of 35 (71 percent). Bryan was 9-of-10 from the line for the Devils.
The Devils held a 42-26 advantage in rebounds.
D'Youville received a 23-point effort from Grant Beyer, and 18 from Devon Darrell.
Next up, the Devils are headed to Rochester for the Nazareth Tournament to take on Vassar on Friday.
