Devils come up short

POTSDAM, N.Y. -- Nursing a one-point lead in the final minute, the Fredonia men's basketball team could not hold on, dropping a 75-72 game at Potsdam. Mark Morgan (Bronx, N.Y. / South Bronx Prep) turned in a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds, and Bediako Nyasa (Harlem, N.Y. / Walton) scored 15 points.

With Fredonia up 72-71, Potsdam converted a pair of free throws with 41 seconds left to take the lead. After the Devils failed to score at the offensive end, Potsdam iced the game with another pair of free throws in the closing seconds.

A De'Quan Smith (Rochester, N.Y. / Penfield) jumper with 16:32 left in the game had tied things at 43. Potsdam then took control going on a 15-0 run over the next four minutes. Down but not out, the Devils slowly clawed back into the game when a layup by Smith at the 1:53 mark gave the Devils the lead. Potsdam scored the game's final four points from the line.

Smith would finish the game with 11 points for Fredonia.

The first half was hotly contested with seven ties and five lead changes. Neither team led by more than six points, and things were knotted at 35-all by the half.

Potsdam (8-6 overall / 4-3 SUNYAC) was led by Dante Langley with 25 points and Nosa Onabor had 14.

Fredonia held the edge in field goal percentage (45 to 36) and rebounds (41 to 36). However, Potsdam was 26 of 32 from the line, compared to eight of nine by Fredonia. The Devils committed 23 fouls to Potsdam's 13.

The Devils (1-11 overall / 1-5 SUNYAC) will play host to Pitt Bradford in non-conference action on Tuesday.
