FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Matthew Stefaniw scored from the right flat in the 87th minute to give Brockport a 1-0 SUNYAC men's soccer win over the Fredonia Blue Devils.
After a counter from his team's midfield, Stefaniw received a through ball from A.J. Sinclair and outran a defender up the right side. Stefaniw connected with a low shot inside the opposite post.
Brockport goalkeeper Tautis Poniskaitis made two saves for the shutout. His counterpart, Fredonia junior
Ty Bentham (Columbus, Ind./Columbus North), had nine saves, including several brilliant stops late in the game to keep the game scoreless.
Cole Teelin (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) and
Tristan Desnerck (Lakewood, N.Y./Southwestern) were credited with one shot on goal each for the Blue Devils, who fell to 2-6-1 overall and 0-3-0 in the SUNYAC. Brockport improved to 8-2-0 overall and 3-0-0 in the conference.
Fredonia had two good scoring chances in the first half.
Kevin Loftus (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster) booted a close shot over the bar after a free kick and volley in the box in the 19th minute. Later in the half, another free kick resulted in a header and short shot near the right post, all of which was negated by an offside.
Each team had a player a player depart with a red card in the 63rd minute, which opened up the field and led to several good Brockport scoring chances.
The Blue Devils will look to right themselves when they take on Geneseo at 1 p.m. Saturdau on the University Stadium pitch.
