Devils hit but fail to score vs. Cortland

CORTLAND, N.Y. -- Fredonia batters collected 11 hits Monday but could not push a run across en route to a 7-0 SUNYAC baseball loss to Cortland.

The Blue Devils (10-7 overall / 1-5 SUNYAC) had at least one hit in eight of the nine innings and had runners in scoring position in the second, fourth, fifth, eighth, and ninth innings. They left 10 runners standed.

J.T. Angora (Rochester, N.Y./Rush Henrietta) had Fredonia's only extra-base hit, a double in the eighth inning. He also singled, Kevin Yirinec (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) had a pair of singles, while Daniel Goodbread (Tully, N.Y./Tully) and Joseph Coene (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas) each singled and walked.

Fredonia used four pitchers. The starter, Pierce Gardon (Colden, N.Y./Holland), took the loss yet pitched effectively. He allowed two runs, one of them earned, on five hits and two walks over the first five innings. He also struck out six before leaving the game trailing 2-0.

Matt Michalski led Cortland's 10-hit attack with three singles and an RBI, Garrett Heaton had two singles and an RBI, and Frank Vesuvio was credted with two sacrifice flies. The Red Dragons, ranked No. 10 by D3Baseball.com, improved to 20-6 overall and 11-1 in the conference.

Fredonia's next scheduled game is Wednesday at Allegheny ahead of a weekend SUNYAC series vs. Oneonta at Ludwig Field. A single game 3 p.m. Friday -- the first home game of the season -- will be followed by a doubleheader Saturday starting at noon. Saturday is also Domestic Violence Awareness Day. The Blue Devils will wear purple uniform tops to show their support.
